Van L. Vincent, president and CEO of VLV Development and VGI Energy Solutions, makes the case for the passage of clean energy legislation in the state of Illinois and earmarking renewable energy credits to fund solar, wind and other forms of clean energy technology in low-income communities that are most in need. In the video, he is standing near a ground mounted solar array that, along with solar panels on the roofs, is helping to power 660 units of the Dearborn Homes affordable housing complex in Chicago. It is the first of its kind solar-powered microgrid cluster in one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods – Bronzeville. In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, the Chicago Housing Authority, Illinois Institute of Technology and the local utility, VLV Development financed and designed, and now will maintain the solar installation project at Dearborn Homes, totaling 750kW of renewable solar energy. VLV worked with Millennium Solar, a local minority-owned solar trainer and contractor, to support the system’s installation.
