In 1893, Henry Ford became chief engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit, Michigan. Ford would eventually leave that post to form his own company; the rest is history.

In 1899, James Ward Packard drove the very first Model A he designed and built. Disappointed with the performance of his Winston, Packard wrote to the Cleveland firm in 1898 with complaints and suggestions. When Alexander Winton rebuffed those ideas and told Packard to build his own car instead, he did! Thus, the Packard Automobile Company was born.
