The Hunt:

Polespearing a beautiful hogfish on a solo freedive in the Bahamas. I spotted the hogfish slowly making its way toward the reef edge and knew it would have to turn. I lined up my polespear and landed a clean gill shot. After pulling the hogfish out of the reef, I wrestled it to the surface and brought it into the boat. Totally stoked on the size, colors and shape of this fish.

Fish Biology & Regulations:

Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) are protogynous hermaphrodites: born female, they can transition to male as they grow. Common around coral reefs and seagrass beds in the Bahamas, hogfish use their large, powerful mouths to root out invertebrate prey from sand and grass flats. They can grow up to 3 feet (91 cm) in length and weigh over 20 pounds (~9 kgs).

In the Bahamas, spearfishing regulations require a minimum fork length of 12 inches and a daily limit of 5 hogfish per person. Always follow local laws before diving or spearing.
