Part III: Testosterone

1. What is Testosterone?
• Testosterone is a sex hormone that is produced in male testicles. It is also produced in small amounts in women's ovaries and adrenal system. Testosterone is used in men and boys to treat conditions caused by a lack of this hormone, such as delayed puberty, impotence, or other hormonal imbalances. It is also used in women to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

2. What is Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT?
• Hormone Replacement Therapy is a process which Transsexual people undergo in order to fulfil their need to medically transition. It involves replacing oestrogen with testosterone for trans-men and replacing testosterone with oestrogen for trans-women.

3. What happens if I start taking testosterone?
• Traits and physical changes commonly attributed to biological males will manifest; such as but not limited to increased libido, increased appetite, enlarged pores, hair growth, fat redistribution (to stomach and arms), and voice pitch change. Some of the changes can be irreversible while some can be reversible once you choose to stop HRT.

4. Do I have to take Testosterone forever? Why?
• Yes, you do have to take Testosterone forever. Just like any condition, your medical transition needs maintenance and your maintenance in this case is testosterone. Stopping HRT can have dire consequences on your end.

5. Can I stop taking Testosterone?
• Yes, you can stop taking Testosterone if you think it is not for you anymore.

6. What happens if I stop taking Testosterone?
• Your feminine traits and physical changes can come back; such as but not limited to: menstruation, higher voice pitch, and fat redistribution (to chest and thighs).

7. What are the side effects of Testosterone?
• Infertility, cessation of menstruation, baldness, cancer risks, heart disease, acne, body odour change, mood swings, increased temper etc.

8. Where can I buy Testosterone?
• A doctor can give you a prescription to take Testosterone which can be bought at your local drugstores.

9. Do I really need to see and consult a doctor for HRT?
• Yes, you do need to see and consult a doctor for HRT. They will require you to undergo lab tests to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo hormone replacement therapy.
