In 1970, Donna, a nursing student, received a Raggedy Ann doll as a gift. At first, it seemed harmless, but soon Donna and her roommate Angie noticed strange occurrences. The doll would move on its own—sitting upright when left lying down, or even relocating around the apartment. Then, they found a note in the doll’s lap, written in childlike handwriting: “Help me.” Disturbed, they turned to a psychic medium, who revealed that the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle Higgins.

However, this wasn’t a harmless spirit. Soon, the paranormal events escalated, and the doll’s movements grew more erratic. Donna and Angie were terrified, and they called in paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens discovered that Annabelle was not simply haunted, but was a vessel for a demonic entity. Ed explained that demons can attach themselves to objects, using them as a portal to manipulate and harm the living.

The Warrens performed an exorcism on the apartment and took the doll into their care, locking her away in their Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut. There, Annabelle remains, encased in a glass box with a sign that reads “Positively do not open”. Despite being contained, the doll’s evil legacy continues.
