These are the Special Demonstrations, a series of high quality replays by some of the best shooting game players out there, donated by the players themselves. As with the past SD releases, the motto is "great players deserve high quality replays", and I hope to continue that with every successive release.

The series is captured by the players themselves, and the raw footage is then processed by myself using Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor into something that hopefully resembles a commercial replay release.

BAF recently approached me with a collaboration offer to work on a replay for his most recent WR for the PC doujin STG Gundemonium Recollection, a short but frenetic horizontal scroller by prolific developer Platine Dispositif.

So why not do one? The game is excellent, it has a lot of scoring depth that's not really explained anywhere, and there's not a lot of good footage around for it in a score-play sense. Certainly not with commentary available. I also haven't considered working much with doujin replays since they aren't played as frequently as arcade games, but hopefully this is the first in a long line of future doujin STG replays on Special Demonstrations.

So let's get to it!

I recently purchased an M2 Max-equipped 16" MacBook Pro to replace the old trooper from 2010, and the speed it churns out video encodes is absolutely frightening. This one in particular only took 18mins to encode, even with all of the video compositing and effects added, so I'm happy that I've got a new system to work on, as I've been wanting to continue this project on for a while, but always put it off as I didn't have a system that could work with video at the speed I need it to.

I also put it off because it took forever to hand-edit commentary text into the videos using the Title generator in FCPX, but after a bit of research and trial-and-error, I have a much faster workflow now which uses .srt subtitle files and the Caption Burner plugin by FXFactory (https://fxfactory.com/info/captionbur...) to import the .srt wholesale. From there it's just a case of editing its position and max width, and that's it. If anything, the most time spent now is just compositing the replay, and setting up the replay timer bar (which I can probably do a different way to be faster).

There's way more to come in the future, hopefully, so keep an eye out. And thanks to BAF for the video footage, and working on the commentary script that's used on the video. Good luck with the rest of the attempts, and well done on the WR for Eryth!
