Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi, known in the West as Saladin, was one of the greatest Muslim leaders in history. He was born in 1137 in Tikrit, Iraq, into a Kurdish family. His real name was Yusuf ibn Ayyub, but he became famous by the title Salahuddin, which means “Righteousness of the Faith.”

He grew up during a time when the Crusaders controlled large parts of the Middle East, including Al-Quds (Jerusalem). Salahuddin first served under his uncle, Shirkuh, who was a general in Egypt. After Shirkuh’s death, Salahuddin became the vizier (chief minister) of Egypt. Through his leadership, he united Egypt and later Syria under his rule, founding the powerful Ayyubid dynasty.

Salahuddin is most remembered for his battles against the Crusaders. In 1187, he achieved his greatest victory at the Battle of Hattin, where his forces crushed the Crusader army. Soon after, he entered Jerusalem and reclaimed Al-Quds for the Muslims after nearly 90 years of Crusader occupation. Unlike the Crusaders, who had killed many when they captured the city in 1099, Salahuddin allowed Christian residents to leave peacefully and treated them with mercy.

His chivalry, justice, and kindness made him respected not only among Muslims but also admired by many Christians of Europe. Even his enemies recognized him as a noble and honorable leader. Salahuddin continued to defend the Muslim lands against the Crusaders until his death in 1193 in Damascus.

His legacy remains as a symbol of courage, unity, and mercy. To this day, Salahuddin Ayyubi is remembered as the liberator of Al-Quds and one of the greatest heroes of the Islamic world.
