Whenever someone asks if there is a similar game to Battle Brothers, the most popular answer is Mount & Blade or Xcom but i always say Starsector!

Starsector is a 2d space sandbox game focused on exploration, combat and management.
It has been around for many years, I first heard about it in 2013 - 2014.
The game still receives updates by the developer Fractal Softworks and has a very active modding scene.
It's 1.0 version has not been released yet but it's better than countless other games that are fully released.

SELF IMPOSED RULES
======================
No save scumming unless some bs happens like missclicking - no commission - no stipend - can't deploy combat ships in battle unless commanded by an officer - officers can die - no recovering ships after battle (friendly and enemy) - no recovering derelict ships unless stored in ruins or inside structures - no agents for player - no smuggling (for the most part) - increased story points/lvl to 6 - increased officer limit for player and enemies - no usage of free storage space like abandoned stations - allowed to use story points to disengage from combat since retreating in Starsector is just an afterthought.
