18,446,744,073,709,551 planets in No Man's Sky and 90 percent of them containing no life at all. So what purpose do they have and why should we explore them?
Firstly they tend to contain the most valuable resources. Sean Murray confirmed this in an interview and it makes sense that they would. Their position from the sun would create elements that wouldn't be found on other planets. So for those that are interested in Mining or just to have those rare elements, you will be investing a lot of time exploring these planets.
The second as I put it pertains to Risk over Reward. There has to be a valuable reason for you to risk exploring these planets as they are inhospitable and not well suiting to you staying alive. Hello Games want us to explore every planet and not just fly past them. So they would place valuable items for us to find. The most valuable of items are language Monoliths and Blueprints for upgrades. I am certain that these planets will hold a lot of the rare blueprints and many quality items that will have you spending your times exploring the planets landscape.
