The final season of the Expanse opened every episode with a short scene on Laconia where a young girl brought her brother back from the dead with the help of what she referred to as "dogs". This story wasn't directly connected to the main story of the war with the Free Navy in Sol System, and some fans wondered why they included it in the shorter season at all.

Strange Dogs is an Expanse novella that shows what life on Laconia was like right after Winston Duarte and the Breakaway Martian Fleet arrived. Cara and her family came to the planet as part of a science expedition and weren't able to leave once the soldiers arrived. In season 6 we see that things are starting to wake up on the planet after the active protomolecule sample arrived.

After Cara's little brother Xan dies in an accident she meets Winston Duarte. She had encountered some strange creatures in the woods near her house, and noticed that reanimated a bird that had died. She decides to enlist their help to bring her brother back, and when her parents find out they're terrified. Cara leaves home with her brother who is no longer dead, but noticeably changed. It's implied that she will die of starvation and expects that they'll bring her back as well.
