Flipping tires makes you look like a badass. It’s also a very applicable movement to life if you compare it to moving furniture, boxes, heavy potted plants, etc. The movement is a combination of lifting straight up and pushing forward. A deadlift involves picking a weight straight up to a standing position. In a tire flip, the goal is to lift up and forward.

When setting up for this movement (or anything like it) it is important to get as close to the object as possible to help reduce the amount of stress that will be applied to the torso. The closer you are to the object, the easier it will be for you to keep the weight distributed throughout your legs and hips, not just your back. Notice that before I lift the tire, my shoulders are slightly rounded forward toward the tire. As I am about to lift if, I “scoop” my blades, pull them down toward my back pockets, and extend my upper back. This creates a shit load of tension through the entire back by activating the latissimus dorsi and erectors (big back straps). The result will be an increase in stability throughout the entire back, allowing you to use your hips/legs to drive the movement rather than your lower back.

Mobility in the hips/back plays a huge role in your ability to lift an object that is close to the ground like a tire. Notice that my hands are on the ground to start… a barbell is a few inches off of the ground… thus the hips need to be very mobile to get you that low. As you lift the tire, maintain tension from head to toe and drive through your entire foot to simultaneously deadlift and push the tire forward. The slower you go, the more intense this will be. The more explosive you are, the easier it will be to flip the tire.

If you love lifting tires (it is a ton of fun IMO) and aren’t quite sure if you are able to maintain the form in the video, start with a lighter/smaller tire and record yourself from the side view. Analyze your movement and make improvements. This tire was probably about 350lbs.
