Traditional Nakanai Hits
Band: La Bilau Projekt
Song: Lo Riri Nalo
This song is dedicated to Martha Laigi Isu and other elders of Galeoale Village that have passed on, as it was one of their favourite suluko songs. This song is rarley sung in Galeoale anymore, by recording it we hope to remind fellow village members of this song.
Lo Riri Nalo comes under the category of songs known as Suluko. Suluko songs are usually fast and most of them do not originate from Nakanai, but from neighbouring languages from the east, mainly Kol and Mengen. They were passed on to us through clan affiliations, intermarriage between members of both languages and past trade. Some songs were also passed from other non native speakers of the language to Nakanai speakers. For example, some songs were passed to Meramera people from Kol/Mengen and then to Nakanai. Due to these songs being passed through various people and generations, lyrics of the songs are often mispronounced and the tune can also vary in different areas.
