LNP Senator Amanda Stoker says the deal secured by the federal government with Moderna to produce mRNA vaccines in Australia is an “example of the success” of the nation’s modern manufacturing strategy.

A three-way partnership between pharmaceutical giant Moderna and the Victorian and federal governments will see up to 100 million vaccines produced each year to protect Australia against future pandemics and flus.

“This announcement is important because it builds a sovereign capacity in Australia to produce vaccines in relation to pandemics, now and future, but also for seasonal viruses,” she told Sky News host Chris Smith.

“It also is yet another example of the success of Australia's modern manufacturing strategy, which means we now have over a million Australians working in manufacturing now, and that’s the highest level we’ve seen since 2009.

“That represents the development of an important new industry as well as securing our ability to keep Australians healthy.”
