PETA had to sue Louisiana State University to uncover public records about the university’s disturbing and deadly experiments on songbirds—and now we know what it was trying to hide. Taxpayers footed the staggering $1 million bill for this cruelty, which the newly obtained footage and documents expose in harrowing detail. The videos reveal what appears to be a storage closet lined with barren metal cages, each confining a frantic sparrow captured from the wild by experimenter Christine Lattin and her team. Then students place cocktail umbrellas and pipe cleaners near the birds' food bowls to see whether the birds—who’d been starved overnight—will still eat.
