Since 1790, this process has occurred on a 10 year basis like clockwork due to the requirements of the U.S. Constitution. As the United States grew in size and population, the census became more complicated.

The seemingly mundane administrative work yields massive political results and has had its fair share of controversy, past and present. Results are scrutinized by the government and the public due to their ramifications. The U.S. Census Bureau released their preliminary findings in April of 2021 which begins the process of a nationwide political realignment that occurs every 10 years.

The census is important for numerous reasons but we’re going to narrow it down to a handful for this video. The first is that it is used to apportion congressional seats.

The second reason the census is important has to do with redistricting within states.

The third reason the census is important has to do with federal allocations.

The national count has always been a deeply controversial endeavor and the 2020 census did not disappoint.
