The Indian Ministry of Defense stated that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has offered Malaysia a tandem seat version of the Tejas fighter jet .

This was revealed by the Indian Defense Minister Ajay Bhatt in a written reply to members of parliament.

It was stated that in 2019 HAL had received a request for information (RFI) from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) to purchase light fighter jets.

Following its response to the RFI, HAL submitted an offer to a request for proposal (RFP) in October 2021.

In October 2021, a tender was released by the RMAF for 18 advanced trainer jets of the Fighter Lead In Trainer – Light Combat Aircraft (FLIT – LCA) type.

From there, HAL offers the LCA Tejas a tandem seat variant which can also be used for pilot training.

Within India itself, in February last year New Delhi had awarded a 6.57 billion contract to HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas LCAs.

Deliveries of the aircraft under this contract are scheduled to begin in 2023.
