Music for Oboe and Orchestra is the unpretentious, dispassionate title Wolfgang Rihm gave the oboe concerto in 1993-94 for his fellow professor in Karlsruhe, Thomas Indermühle, and which was commissioned by the Stuttgart Philharmonic. The concerto plays on the ambiguity inherent in the history of the genre, allows surprising reminiscences of pastoral or serenade-like yesterdays shimmer through and then comes under destructive gears of positively scenic clarity by having the oboe and the orchestra boost one another up from a stage of “frolicsome” merriment occasionally slipping into the trivial (together with a hidden quote from one of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances) into an ever more threatening process (“as if overwound”, “wild and funny”, “ever more grimly”, "hunted”, “frantic” are the performance instructions), that can only end in collapse.
