Welcome to another EXTRAS.

In today’s extra-short EXTRAS video, I’m going to show you how I protect my artwork from sneaky resin drips.

As you may know, I also use Liquid Latex when protecting pieces but I only use this to protect smooth, hard surfaces like resin. The reason I don’t use latex for things like this wooden board or canvases is because the latex doesn’t come off of porous surfaces. However, it’s great for smooth surfaces like the back of resin coasters for example.

In this video I’ve used duck tape. Plain old duck tape. I know a lot of artists use painters tape which does work but I thought I’d use something that the average person was more likely to have lying around. I have a lot of this tape anyway for packaging and the only downside to it that I’ve noticed is that it’s very very sticky! This just means it’s a little harder to pull away from your pieces at the end, but not enough for it to be a real issue or to make me want to buy different tape!

The great thing about this tape is it has a shiny surface so the resin is already wanting to peel off of it once it’s cured. There’s little to no heat gun usage needed to pry the drips away. You can see how easy it is for me to pick them off.

Sometimes resin still sneaks under the tape, but I think that’s more down to the surface that the tape is stuck to rather than the tape itself, if that makes sense. If this happens, just sand the excess resin off with either sand paper or, if you have one, an orbital sander.

This whole process is just so much easier than having to pick off and sand away full drips…trust me, I’ve had to do it multiple times when I’ve forgotten to add tape or apply latex, it’s not fun!
