Who is Savita?

In the first place, who is this Savita, the Devata of the main Gayatri mantra? Generally, by the word Savita, we mean the Sun, which is the centre of the solar system and round which all the planets are revolving.

Science has shown that the Sun is the source of all kinds of energies which are needed for life in the solar system....

What Science does not know—and what is amazing, does not even care to know—is that the Sun is not only the centre and source of physical life but also of life in all its aspects: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The use of Yogic methods by our Rishis and Adepts of occultism led to the discovery that the Sun in its physical aspects is merely the outermost cover or casing of the total reality which it hides.

Within the physical Sun and interpenetrating the solar system are hidden subtler worlds of unimaginable splendour and power, and all these worlds are the expressions or bodies of a Mighty Being whom we call Surya Narayana, or the Solar Logos.

This Being is the Presiding Deity or Isvara of the solar system (brahmanda), and all life working at different levels and in different spheres in the solar system is contained within His consciousness and is nourished by His life and the forces and energies which emanate from Him. All forms of consciousness in the solar system are limited expressions of His Consciousness. All powers are derived from His power. We literally ‘live, move and have our being in Him’.

According to Hindu philosophy, every solar system or brahmanda is a separate self-contained unit in the universe and is presided over by an Isvara in His three aspects of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha.

The Mystery of Human Destiny

The student should ponder for a while on the significance of these profound truths and how they can revolutionize the lives of people who allow themselves to remain confined completely within their temporary insignificant worlds of pleasures and small ambitions, while these worlds of glorious realities within them remain unexplored and undiscovered.
Looked at from the purely physical point of view, the Sun is a huge sphere of blinding glory radiating light and other innumerable kinds of physical energies throughout the solar system. Man is merely a small lump of flesh and bones living on a distant planet for a few years and then disappearing into utter nothingness and oblivion. From the purely materialistic point of view, which is emphasized and accepted thoughtlessly these days, man is an absolutely insignificant creature. Only people who refuse to study what all great Teachers have said and to take an intelligent view of life can remain contented with such a conception of human life.

But, when as a result of sadhana the inner eyes of man are opened, a tremendous, breath-taking mystery reveals itself within his consciousness. The outer Sun, tremendously glorious and awe-inspiring as it is, is seen to be a mere physical vehicle of a mighty and stupendous Consciousness which pervades the solar system in layer after layer of unimaginable glory. And what is most wonderful, the man who has gained this vision is a part of that glorious Consciousness! He finds that his limited consciousness is an expression, a facet of that Consciousness, a ray of that spiritual Sun. In fact, he and the spiritual Sun hidden behind the physical Sun are in a mysterious and yet very real way one. Oh! Mystery of mysteries which remains to be unravelled by the illusion-bound man who knows not himself and his destiny. This spiritual Sun of Consciousness is the Savita—He whom Gayatri is meant to reveal by stages.

The Mountain of Self-Realisation

The process of Self-realisation will thus be seen to be a gradual stepping up of our own consciousness to meet the consciousness of the Solar Logos as it is reflected in the progressively subtler worlds existing within the solar system.

It is like climbing a mountain of greater and never-ending heights. As you pass one height after another, you get a grander view of the surrounding panorama. It is not only that we get a more glorious vision of Reality, but we find ourselves becoming more and more one with the Reality we perceive. We seem to be expanding into that all-embracing Reality, and that Reality seems to be descending into us.
