I've avoided going to Mt Vernon for decades because I always felt that the NPS should run it, not a non profit. But I found out today that the Mount Vernon Ladies Association predates the NPS, and if they hadn't stepped in, George Washington's home wouldn't have survived. I believe it'd be tragic to not have our first President's home in the American history canon.They've done a beautiful job and fostered preservation of America's gems first. Kudos to them. They've also done a good job presenting the thorny topic of slavery, and in this case, I'm now wondering if the fact that Mount Vernon is not funded by federal dollars might actually be a good thing regarding the telling of the slavery story. So I'm glad we went today. Shame on me for holding out so ignorantly for so long. I didn't know the history of the MVLA, and I'm glad to get enlightened today.
