On my saddest days I turn to the instant joy of music like this. A love song that generates a relaxing warmth like this is hard to come by these days. The Spinners career with Thom Bell was one of the finest partnerships ever, together they made heartfelt music that should never be forgotten.

"Could It Be I'm Fallin In Love" was the successful follow up to their first hit "I'll Be Around" and both songs were #1 R&B hits and Hot100 hits with "Could" peaking at #4 and "Around" spending two weeks at #3. If you listen to the lyrics here you will hear a shout out to their first #1 "when you need me I'll Be Around".

The legendary MFSB orchestra recorded one of their finest arrangements ever. In addition to the Spinners voices were the Sweethearts of Sigma; Barbara Ingram, Carla Benson and Yvette Benton along with lyricist Linda Creed on backgrounds.

It was written by brothers Melvin and Mervin Steals, professionally known as Mystro & Lyric who worked for Atlantic as in house writers for the label. Thom Bell did a fantastic job of keeping that MFSB groove but creating a unique sound that defined the Spinners in the 1970's. Bell wrote and produced New York City's "I'm Doing Fine Now" a #17 Hot100 hit in 1973.

"Flocculent" is not a word I would use to describe this genre of music, but some critics have come to that conclusion and write it off. I don't get it. There was a new genre of soul that the Delfonics, Chi-Lites and Blue Magic ascribed to called sweet soul, pleasant to the ear and soothing to the soul. The Spinners and Thom Bell just have to look at how these songs are revered and enjoyed today to see they have created classic soul music for the ages. It looks like the music has outlasted the critics...
