FULL MATCH | Wrexham v Cardiff City

Live coverage of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup Final between Wrexham and Cardiff City from Rodney Parade.

On Sunday afternoon, Cardiff City will be hoping to win the Bute Energy Welsh Cup for the third time in a row.

The Bluebirds managed to lift the cup in Merthyr Tydfil last season after beating Llansawel 4-0.

Their previous success in the competition was a 2-0 win against Cardiff Met in 2022. Before that Cardiff had not won the cup since 2016, which was the clubs first time lifting the trophy.

Cardiff are the champions of the Genero Adran Premier once again this year, with the club also lifting the Genero Adran Trophy after defeating Swansea 5-1 in the final.

Cardiff won the league for the first time in 10 years last season, with the club also managing to lift the Welsh Cup trophy, but missed out on the Adran trophy after a 3-1 defeat against Cardiff Met in the final. Cardiff City manager Iain Darbyshire will be determined to go one step further this season in order to complete the treble.

Only Swansea City have managed to beat Cardiff in the league this year. The Swans managed to defeat the Bluebirds by two goals to nil in the Capital at the beginning of February, and then once again on home soil at the end of March.

A goalless game against Aberystwyth in September is the only other time Cardiff have not won a league game this season.

Wrexham are aiming to be crowned champions of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup for the first time in their history.

Wrexham have only reached the final once before, and that was against another club from Cardiff, ‘Cardiff City Ladies’, where they lost 9-0. Despite the similarity in the names ‘Cardiff City Ladies’ are a club that is completely separate from Wrexham’s opponents this year ‘Cardiff City Women’.

During the 2015-2016 season, Wrexham pulled out of the Genero Adran Premier after failing to attract players.

After returning to the Genero Adran Premier this year, Wrexham have managed to finish 3rd, behind Cardiff and Swansea, the only two clubs to defeat the reds this season.

Wrexham haven’t had much luck against the Bluebirds, losing five games in a row in all competitions. A win for Wrexham on Sunday will grant them they’re first ever victory against Cardiff.

Cardiff striker Eliza Collie scored the most goals in the Genero Adran Premier this season with 17 goals, but Wrexham’s top scorer, Rosie Hughes wasn’t far behind with 15 goals across the season.

Out of the 15 players who have scored five goals or more in the Genero Adran Premier this season, five of them play for Cardiff, with 21 different players scoring for the Bluebirds across every competition this season.

Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea decided to offer semi-professional contracts to their players this season, with Wrexham offering contracts to 10 players, and Cardiff offering contracts to the entire squad.

Semi Final: Cardiff 3-1 Swansea, Wrexham 1-0 TNS
Quarter Final: Wrexham 2-0 Llansawel, Pontypridd 0-3 Cardiff
2nd Round: Wrexham 1-0 Llandudno, Cardiff 5-0 Swansea University
Round 1: Pwllheli 0-13 Wrexham, Llanelli 0-14 Cardiff
