One of the most common house-rules amongst players of 5e is that attack rolls which come up as a "1" on the D20 are considered “critical fumbles” and that something tragic or unexpected should happen as a result.

This isn’t present anywhere in the 5e rules, but it exists in our hearts and minds because it has been a rule in the past.

As both a DM and a player, I have always enjoyed including a table as a quick-reference guide for critical hits and fumbles. I genuinely feel that it adds something spectacular to the game when rolling a 20 can result in exploding heads, and rolling a 1 can result in lost toes.
