What is that all about?

I have written the first book in a space adventure trilogy for 8-12 year olds, called Generation moon. In fact the whole project is called generation moon.

I got the idea for the story one day, when I was thinking about how SpaceX are planning to send starships to the moon. When they done their job, they will topple them over on their sides to become living Spaces, the beginnings of a community on the moon. How soon would they have kids? I wondered to myself idly.

As a child of the 60s, I was captivated by the Apollo moon missions.

The Artemis and starship programs have caught my imagination again. I feel a real sense of excitement in the air, about manned space exploration, like there was back in the 1960s

Then there was a race between America and the Soviet Union to be the first to land on the moon

What other competition might there be? I thought… To have the first kid on the moon! As I had that thought my mind exploded, and I could see the whole plot forming in my imagination there and then. I quickly made notes, so I didn’t forget

I have learned over the years that excitement over new ideas can soon fade, so I write down the ideas and let them moulder for a while and see if I’m still excited by them a few days later.

Well I was and one morning, I thought let’s just start writing and I did – I couldn’t stop til I’d finished – it was so exciting.

I thought it was going to be one book, but once I started, I realised the whole plot split into three main sections. One day they might come together as one big book, but I thought trilogy!

I talked to a couple of traditional publishers about it, who said that, thanks to the pandemic, many authors had been writing lots of stuff so they were pretty full up until 2024 or 2025. Of course that would be far too late, the space program is progressing now at a pace.

This thing is happening now and it needs to be published now.

I have self-published books before, but I just released them into the wild, to let them sink or swim. Mostly they sank! And that is the fate of the most self-published books.

This time, I decided I really had to think like a publisher and I’d have to learn about and understand marketing.

Marketing is an uncomfortable concept for artists, who think it’s kind of selling out. But I’ve had a big rethink about that and I’ve come to realise that there is no point creating something if nobody ever knows about it. The biblical term is, “hiding your light under a bushel.” It’s an age old problem!


So I am learning all about marketing and this video is part of that process and I hope at the end of the project I’ll be able to share my experience and maybe mentor other would-be self-publishers along the way.

Over the years I have gained all the skills necessary to create and publish a book like this. A trilogy is a daunting prospect. It would be a year-long, or even longer, project. However, I decided this was a thing that I was going to do and heck with it. Let’s go! I watched Kennedy’s inspirational speech that started the Appolo missions and started.

So for the next 10 days I will be introducing different aspects of this project leading up to the big launch day of Generation Moon.

This countdown will lead to a live launch of the kickstarter campaign on the 1st of February at 5 pm UK time which is currently GMT
