By observing the newborn face you can analyze the cranial nerves. With the eye movements you are able to analyze cranial nerves 3,4, and 6. Cranial nerve 7 by looking at facial movements. Cranial nerve 12 by looking at the baby sucking while feeding, and when swallowing. Cranial nerve 11 by looking at the head rotation. Swallowing also helps you evaluate Cranial Nerves 5, 7, 9, 10, and 12. With exposure to light you can test cranial nerve 2.
If the child does not respond to stimulation or movements, or has flat facial expressions, it can be a sign of neurologic conditions that require close attention. Those are red flags that are important to take in consideration when establishing a plan of care for your patients.
