In a searing address at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes delivered one of the strongest international condemnations of Nicolas Maduro’s regime to date. Citing UN-documented torture, enforced disappearances, and the targeting of children after Venezuela’s 2024 election, he described the country as a “brutal authoritarian state” where dissent is met with electric shocks, suffocation, and sexual violence.
Frydnes said these horrors “are not isolated stories — this is Venezuela today,” accusing Maduro’s government of committing crimes against humanity while silencing democratic voices.
Amid this powerful indictment, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado — honored for her leadership, courage, and unwavering fight for democracy in one of the world’s harshest authoritarian environments.
