In this powerful and humbling experience, we visit a landfill site in **Phnom Penh, Cambodia**, home to many families who live and work on the edge of the city’s waste grounds.

This is not something you see on the tourist trail.

We walk through a village built beside the landfill, where families survive day-to-day by sorting and sifting through trash to find recyclable materials they can sell. It’s hard, physical work — yet what struck us most wasn’t just the conditions… it was the spirit of the community.

Children run and play among the narrow dirt paths, laughing and smiling despite the surroundings. We brought cakes and candy to share, and were greeted with beaming smiles, excitement, and heartfelt thank you’s. Their warmth and joy are something we will never forget.

We spend time speaking with local residents, learning about their daily routines, the challenges they face, and how they support one another. From sunrise sorting to evening family life, this landfill community shows resilience, strength, and humanity in ways that truly moved us.

This visit to a Phnom Penh landfill community was a reminder that happiness, connection, and kindness can exist even in the most unexpected places.
