No matter how long it’s been since you discontinued your education at UNI, there are reasons to return to finish what you started. Tonya Wilson-Story just earned her master’s after many years away from her studies and many years teaching elementary school. You can do the same thing!

From the time she was in kindergarten, Tonya knew she wanted to be a teacher. That passion carried her through her first degree at the University of Northern Iowa. It was soon after she earned that bachelor’s degree she began working toward her master’s.

But life got in the way. She had kids. She coached swim team, and continuing with her program was no longer practical. So she ultimately halted her degree progress.

Many years later, Tonya saw an ad on Facebook about returning to UNI to continue her studies. Knowing she had nothing to lose, she decided to click on the ad. She received an email from a UNI staff member the very next day who talked Tonya through her options. Tonya discovered she only had one class left! She was able to enroll to continue her studies online.

Throughout her experience finishing her degree, Tonya has encountered tremendous support from faculty and staff at UNI. As an older student, Tonya admits she is not always the best with technology, but faculty and staff have been available to help her through this transition. She loves how the online courses have lots of flexibility to fit her busy lifestyle.

Even after so many years of teaching, Tonya believes earning her master’s has made her a better teacher. She’s been able to update herself on best practices and new research being done in her field. Earning the degree has felt like a huge relief!
