The road from Jaffna to Mannar offers a striking blend of arid landscapes, coastal marshes, and rich birdlife, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic and soulful drives.
Nature’s Palette Along the A32 Road:Traveling the 117 km stretch from Jaffna to Mannar via Pooneryn unveils a unique ecological corridor. The terrain transitions from Jaffna’s dry peninsula to Mannar’s salt flats and wetlands, with the road flanked by flat, semi-arid scrublands, dotted with palmyra palms and thorny bushes. Despite its sparse vegetation, the region teems with life—especially birds. Between December and March, Mannar’s salt flats host hundreds of Greater Flamingos, Glossy Ibises, and other migratory waterfowl, creating a surreal spectacle of pink and white against the shimmering marshes.
The A32 highway is smooth and well-marked, allowing for a comfortable 2-hour drive. As you leave Jaffna, the road hugs the coastline briefly before cutting through remote jungle stretches and open plains. The route is largely devoid of urban clutter, offering uninterrupted views of the horizon. Cattle and occasional wild animals may cross the road, especially near the Giant’s Tank Sanctuary, so cautious driving is advised.
