Everyone experiences this differently, but there are some common signs of shoulder tension caused by anxiety:
-Aching or stabbing pain in one or both shoulders,
-Tension that radiates into the neck or upper back,
-Clicking or grinding when you rotate your arm

So What’s Happening in Your Body?

Anxiety and stress activate our sympathetic nervous system (our fight or flight response), which increases muscle tension, especially in areas like the shoulders and back. The cortisol released during anxiety also increases inflammation, which can aggravate existing shoulder conditions. Over time, our body forgets how to switch off. It gets used to being in a state of hyper-alertness. This is why tension remains even when we’re not consciously stressed.

Anxiety is your nervous system operating in what we call the sympathetic state, or fight-or-flight mode. Your nervous system has two primary states: the sympathetic state, which is your survival mode. Your heart rate increases, muscles tense, and breathing quickens. Your body is preparing for danger. When you're in this state for extended periods, your neck muscles remain contracted, always ready to protect you.

The Parasympathetic State (Rest and Digest) is your recovery mode. Your heart rate slows, your muscles relax, and your breathing deepens. This is when your body feels safe enough to release tension and repair itself.
