Hey guys, it's Jake here with Etrailer. Today we have a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs. An air helper spring is going to mount between the bottom of your frame and the top of your axle. It's gonna go right where your jounce bumpers are from the factory. So you'll see your jounce bumpers are very, very small, so your truck has to sag a lot for those to reach the top of the axle. These are gonna actually attach to the frame and the axle so that they're making contact all the time.
You can go anywhere from 5 PSI all the way up to 150 PSI with these particular air bags. These are the red label bags. What I would recommend is keeping 'em at 5 all the time unless you're towing a trailer, then you can just add and subtract the air to get the load leveling that you want. And that's what they're designed to do is level your vehicle out. They're not designed to go past level because then the air bags are gonna be a little too stiff and you're gonna feel like the ride is not comfortable at all.
So they're really just designed to help take that sag out of the rear end of your truck. Here you can see our air bag installed. It's gonna have a rubber double convoluted design. So you'll see the two bubbles on it instead of it being one solid air bag. This double convoluted design is one design for strength and the other purpose of it is so that the air bag travels straight up and down whenever it is, whenever you're driving down the road, it's gonna act just like a spring.
The Firestone Red Label bags, which is the ones we have on here, are gonna be rated for a load carrying capacity of 7,500 pounds. That is quite a lot even for a 3500, that is way more than the back of this truck is designed to carry, straight down on top of the suspension. It's just to show you how strong they are so that you know they're gonna handle the load that you're carrying safely. The other thing that we get a lot of questions on for air bags or for any suspension enhancement is will this increase my carrying capacity of my vehicle And the answer is no, it will not. So you will want to check in the owner's manual of your vehicle to check or to see what your vehicle's designed to carry and go with the lowest rated component between the truck and the air bags.
Chances are, it's probably gonna be the truck. For this particular kit, we decided to pair it with the Firestone Onboard Air Compressor Kit, which is designed to use your cell phone and you can just add and subtract the air into the air bags. What's nice about that is that if you're going down the road and you feel like your ride is too stiff or too soft, you can just hop onto the app, you can increase the air pressure, you can decrease the air pressure on the fly as you're driving, you don't even have to be at a stop. Where that is beneficial is that you don't have to stop, pull over and get out and add or subtract air manually. I have had a set of air bags on my truck for about five years now. That particular kit is going to be super nice to have. I had it without an air compressor and I had it with air compressor. And having it without an air compressor is very, very frustrating. It makes you not want to use your bags as much, but when you have an air compressor, you can really get it dialed in to the right pressure you should be towing with. And if you decide to not go with an air compressor, that's okay. This kit is going to come with two manual inflation valves, which you can install in the back of your vehicle. I like to put it on a nice sleek place. I just decided to put the bracket that's included in the kit onto the end of our hitch receiver tube here. That will allow us to increase and decrease the air pressure with either a bike pump, a lot of people like to use, if you have a pump that inflates sporting equipment, stuff like that, you can use those or you can use an air compressor at home. Now that we've gone on some of those details, we're gonna show you how to get this kit installed. But just to kind talk about it a little bit first, this kit is really not too terrible to get installed, you will have to remove your spare tire, the heat shield, and then we can start
