How to enable the Auto-Advance function

The Auto-Advance feature is disabled by default in Gmail (see demo)
To enable it…
Settings⚙️→ See all settings → Advanced
Auto-Advance → Enable
Turning this on will…
Show the next conversation, instead of your inbox, after you delete, archive or mute a conversation.
That’s great, but what does next mean?
Next to you depends on the order that you process emails
Do you process your inbox, top down — from newest to oldest? (standard approach)
Or do you process your inbox, bottom up — from oldest to newest? (no judgment)
If you process your inbox backwards, sorry, bottom up, there is one more step
Settings⚙️→ See all settings
General → Auto-Advance → Select Go to the next (newer) conversation
Again, if you process your inbox normally, sorry, top down, no change!
Leave it on this setting: Go to the previous (older) conversation
Save Changes and verify (see demo)
That’s it!
