Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada's official opposition Conservatives, has secured a return to Parliament after winning a by-election in Alberta's Battle River-Crowfoot riding.

Poilievre won 80.4% of the vote, allowing him to return to the House of Commons and confront Prime Minister Mark Carney over tariffs and other issues.

The Conservative leader accuses the Liberal government of botching its handling of U.S. relations and running up out-of-control deficits.

Poilievre's victory sets the stage for a showdown with Carney when the House of Commons returns on September 15.

The Liberal government has a minority, but is expected to survive confidence votes with the support of smaller parties.

A recent poll put the Liberals at 44% popular support, compared to 33% for the Conservatives.
