How the Vanuatu earthquake disaster unfolded

People were still trapped alive in a collapsed building in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, on Wednesday, a day after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific nation.

Fourteen people have been confirmed killed. Four people were found dead in one collapsed building, the National Disaster Management Office said. More than 200 people have been injured, police said, and videos shared by the national broadcaster show crowds outside the capital’s main hospital. The American embassy was among the buildings that collapsed.

As disaster recovery teams from Australia and New Zealand arrived, survivors trapped beneath a severely damaged building were communicating with rescuers.
