Texas Asphalt Road-eo 2024 hosted by TXAPA

Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, TXAPA hosted 36 students from 11 universities (9 competing teams) in the 7th Annual Asphalt Road-eo. TXAPA has hosted the Road-eo since its beginning in 2017. The first Asphalt Road-eo was a friendly competition between students of Dr. Amit Bhasin at the University of Texas at Austin. Since then, it has steadily evolved into a highly anticipated event attracting university undergraduate students throughout Texas and neighboring Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Student competitors must be undergraduate-level. They receive aggregate and binder from the same source (generously provided by TXAPA members), which they must use to construct an asphalt slab. The competition evaluates the slab for skid resistance, rutting, and cracking. There is also a judging panel portion during which students may explain their design choices and compaction methods, and the judges may ask questions. In addition to the balanced mix design concept it encourages, the competition also emphasizes sustainability and cost efficacy in design, with points added for successfully including industrial waste or subtracted for expensive components.
