Before, during, and after the tumultuous times of World War 1, the creative world also found itself in disarray. The world was turned upside down by violence, and the effects of war made indelible changes to those who reluctantly participated. The world was marked by loss and grief. The Expressionist style first appeared slightly before, during, and after World War I. This style emerged from Germany, and American artists followed suit around 1940. Society had collectively endured the many horrors of war for years on end. Artists of this time began to make art in this new way to deal with collective trauma.

Artists such as Max Beckmann, Eric Heckel, Egon Schiele, Auguste Macke, and Edvard Munch participated in this painting style and defined the era.
