America was started from a British monarchy, and they felt the king was a real dick who abused his power, so they wrote our constitution to prevent one dick from having too much power. They call this checks and balances, where if you get too far out of line, there’s someone else who can push back on you.
Trump has been using a 1977 law, the International Emergency Economics Powers Act that grants him EMERGENCY powers over the economy.

A 3 judge panel at the US Court of International Trade blocked Trump’s global tariffs… including global 10% tariffs, Liberation Day tariffs, and tariffs intended as sanctions for Fentanyl entering the US.

White House has filed an appeal: They said, “It’s not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency.”

Everything NOT industry-specific will be suspended in 10 days unless Trump stops it

The stock markets are up, indicating people with money think there’s a good chance this takes effect.

Trump has other ways to impose tariffs, and White House officials have said they’re already considering. I expect them absolutely to make use of these alternatives.

He might actually increase them further, just to make a point… like the ole, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way” where you punish your opponent for not being submissive.
What does this mean? Even more uncertainty around tariffs.

How much extra tax is going to be added to these imports? Somehow tariffs are easier to change than product pricing. Wouldn’t be surprised if more companies follow DJI’s lead and just stop shipping to the US, especially if they are supply-constrained.

Why is this happening? Rather than passing laws through congress, tariffs can be determined by one man alone: Trump.

But this ability is based on exploiting a fairly obscure law, and based on these judge’s rulings, even that doesn’t apply

Not all tariffs are gone: Trump has used different laws to create different types of tariffs.
Industry-specific tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars and car parts are based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
This ruling doesn’t touch that.
Trump might add more industry-specific tariffs to offset the lost tariffs, but he’s unlikely to target the camera industry.

They’re far more limited.
Section 122 could allow him to impose universal tariffs, but for a maximum of 15% for 150 days.
Section 301 allows for conducting investigations on trading partners and imposing tariffs at the conclusion of the probe, but that would take some time to implement.
There’s a real chain-reaction.
Republicans planned tax cuts based partially on replacing that tax revenue with tariffs. So if they lose that, they need to change their tax plan, too.
These tariffs were supposed to be a negotiating chip with foreign countries, but now that they’re seeing the decision might be made with the court system rather than Trump, they might not be interested in talking with him.
Trump won’t give up.
