(8 Oct 2014) Three volumes of hand-written, indigenous accounts, that vividly describe the history of pre-Hispanic Mexico, went on public display in Mexico City after returning to the country from London.
Mexico's National Anthropology and History Institute bought the Chimalpahin codex - which was written in the 16th and 17th centuries - after learning that Christie's auction house planned to sell it.
The manuscripts demonstrate an effort "to include ancient cultures into universal history, which is very important if we analyse it," said Baltazar Brito, director of the National Library of History and Anthropology.
"This history is crucial to us because it allows us to comprehend a very important part of what we are as Mexicans."
The Chimalpahin manuscripts are written in Nahuatl and Spanish and contain largely unpublished accounts about native life, society and politics.
They belonged to the famed library of Don Carlos Siguenza y Gongora, one of the first great intellectuals born in New Spain.
In 1827, librarian Jose Maria Luis Mora gave the ancient codex to the British and Foreign Bible Society in exchange of a set of protestant Bibles.
The manuscripts, along with 43 other never before seen codices, are on display in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City as the star attraction of the exhibition "Codices of Mexico."
