🌊 Flood Detection Using Sentinel-1 SAR Imagery in Google Earth Engine (GEE)
In this video, we demonstrate how to detect flooded areas using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in Google Earth Engine. Radar imagery is ideal for flood mapping because it can penetrate cloud cover and capture ground conditions even during storms and monsoon seasons.

-Selecting a specific area in Bangladesh

-Filtering Sentinel-1 images before and after a known flood date

-Applying a backscatter threshold to detect water

-Identifying new water-covered areas (flooded zones)

-Visualizing results using GEE’s map viewer

🛰️ Why Sentinel-1?
Unlike optical satellites, Sentinel-1 uses radar waves (C-band SAR) that can see through clouds and at night, making it perfect for flood monitoring. Water surfaces reflect very little radar energy, resulting in dark pixels (low dB values), which we use to detect flooded areas.
