Shukracharya, also known as Shukra or Kavi, was the son of the great sage Bhrigu and Kavyamata. Gifted with intelligence and determination from childhood, he studied under Sage Angirasa. However, troubled by the favoritism shown toward Angirasa’s son Brihaspati, Shukra left in disappointment and continued his learning under Sage Gautama.
His brilliance and spiritual discipline earned him the position of Guru of the Asuras (demons), while Brihaspati became the Guru of the Devas. Shukracharya was deeply devoted to uplifting the Asuras and guiding them with righteousness and strategy.
To gain an advantage for his disciples, Shukracharya performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva and received the powerful Sanjeevani Vidya—the sacred knowledge to revive the dead. With this boon, the Asuras repeatedly returned to life in battles against the gods, shifting the balance of power.
His personal life was filled with dramatic twists too. His mother, Kavyamata, was once killed by Lord Vishnu for protecting the Asuras, creating deep pain and animosity. Later, Shukracharya’s ambition and devotion led him to marry Jayanti, daughter of Indra, after she served him during his penance.
Despite being the Guru of the Asuras, Shukracharya always upheld dharma, spoke fearlessly to kings and gods, and stood against injustice. His wisdom made even his rivals, like Indra and the Devas, respect him dearly.
Shukracharya is also revered in astrology as the presiding deity of Planet Venus (Shukra Graha), symbolizing knowledge, love, wealth, beauty, and rejuvenation.
His life is a blend of determination, power, devotion, sacrifice, and strategy—making him one of the most fascinating sages in Hindu tradition.
