Manuel Ponce is a Mexican composer, who uses folklore in his work and has written many works for guitar and piano.

Manuel Ponce, together with Andres Segovia, made a huge contribution to the recognition of the guitar as an academic instrument on a par with the violin and piano.

Manuel Ponce is the author of a cycle of 24 preludes in all keys, which indicates the composer’s desire to raise the guitar to the same level as academic instruments, but Andres Segovia considered only 6 suitable for performance. Later, Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida recorded 6 more. Studying the composer's letters, Mexican guitarist Miguel Alcazar discovered the original composition of the cycle and in 1981 published a cycle of 24 preludes.
