Описание к видео SGR: Is the Malaba Extension Really Happening?

🚆 Kenya's SGR Extension to Malaba Set to Begin Soon?

Kenya is gearing up for the next phase of its ambitious Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project. The extension from Naivasha to Malaba is gaining momentum, with construction scheduled to begin in the second half of the year, according to Kenya Railways Chairman Abdi Bare.

Managing Director Philip Mainga confirmed that route mapping is complete, and those affected by compulsory land acquisition have already been identified. A Relocation Action Plan has been prepared, and the Environmental Impact Assessment is nearing completion.

However, doubts linger on many Kenyans' minds due to a perception that the Government has been overpromising without really delivering.

In 2024, Kenya Railways also advertised a tender for consultancy services for the Naivasha–Kisumu section (Phase 2B).

The 369-kilometre line will run through Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Busia, ending at Malaba on the Uganda border. Once complete, it is expected to drive growth in agriculture, trade, tourism, and transport across the region.

Part of the East African Railway Master Plan, the extension aims to link Kenya with Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project is estimated to cost KSh 581.6 billion, with Kenya initially planning to cover 30%. However, due to fiscal constraints, the government is now seeking full funding from China.

So far, the SGR has already ferried over 40 million tonnes of cargo and transported more than 15 million passengers, cementing its role in Kenya’s Vision 2030 to become a middle-income, industrialized nation.

In parallel, Kenya is also looking for financiers for a proposed SGR line from Lamu Port to South Sudan as part of the LAPSSET project, another major step in strengthening regional integration and economic growth across Eastern Africa.
