Cresciuta ispirandosi al magistero di Sarah Vaughan, la cantante afroamericana Dianne Reeves ha nel tempo ampliato il suo vocabolario fino a comprendere sia la tradizione jazz che le diverse musiche black fino al pop come dimostra il suo ultimo disco “Beatiful Life” dove interpreta brani di Bob Marley, Fletwood Mac e Ani diFranco. Artista pluripremiata con ben cinque Grammy Award, la cantante è nota al grande pubblico per la straordinaria, per controllo e potenza emozionale, performance nel film “Good Night, and Good Luck” di George Clooney. L’abile scelta del regista e la bellezza delle sue interpretazioni sono decisive per fare di quella pellicola, di un bianco e nero livido, una perfetta ricostruzione dell’epoca buia del maccartismo e della sua deriva autoritaria. Oggi Dianne Reeves rappresenta uno dei migliori esempi del canto jazz in grado di attuare con facilità disarmante l’opinione di Jelly Roll Morton secondo il quale “il jazz può essere applicato ad ogni tipo di brano”.

Growing up inspired by Sarah Vaughan’s mastery, African-American singer Dianne Reeves has expanded her vocabulary over time to include both jazz tradition and various strains of black music, as well as pop, as evidenced in her latest album, “Beautiful Life”, that includes songs by Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac and Ani DiFranco. An award-winning artist with five Grammys, who became famous for the extraordinary control and emotional power of her performance in the film “Good Night, and Good Luck” by George Clooney. The director’s skilful choice and the beauty of her interpretations are decisive in making the film, shot in livid black and white, a perfect reconstruction of the dark age of McCarthyism and its authoritarian drift. Today, Dianne Reeves is one of the finest exponents of jazz singing, supporting Jelly Roll Morton’s assertion that “jazz can be applied to any type of song”.
