In this podcast, I’ll explain the essentials for a successful visa application: outlining how you prepare your financial evidence, including the bank statement required to show funds for tuition fees, and living costs before a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies document (CAS) can be issued. Every UK university has a compliance team that checks your unconditional offer, financial documents, English language requirements, and other UKVI conditions, before releasing your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). We’ll also outline the Immigration Health Surcharge and the three visa processing options—Standard, Priority, and Super Priority—along with expected costs and timelines for 2025–26
I will show you how to present your financial evidence as a Bank Statement. Your bank statement must have been in credit for at least 28 days before the visa application date and be no older than 31 days when applying. The account must be in your or your parent's or guardian’s name and cannot be a business account. The bank statement can be in any currency, but if it is not in British Pounds, UKVI will convert it using the OANDA exchange rate. If your bank statement is not in British Pounds, we recommend adding 5% to cover exchange rate fluctuations. Note that the money shown does not need to be paid upfront, as many universities offer flexible payment plans. A typical bank statement must show enough funds to cover tuition fees minus deposits paid plus UKVI estimated living costs. UKVI estimates living expenses for an academic year in two categories, firstly students studying in London and secondly, students studying outside of London.
Here are examples showing two bank statements, one for a student studying in London and the other for a student studying outside of London
I am using an average tuition fee of £18,000, and a deposit of £5,000. UKVI estimates living expenses for an academic year studying in London = £13,761, for outside London = £10,539
The London student's bank statement would be £26,617, and the student studying outside London £23,539.
You need to pay for your UK Healthcare, which is known as the Immigration Health Surcharge, often shortened to the abbreviation, I.H.S. This is paid during your Student Visa Application. This payment gives you access to the UK National Health System (NHS), so you do not need to buy health insurance. The amount you pay for your Immigration Health Surcharge, depends on the length of your Student Visa, which may last longer than your course of study. Immigration Health Surcharge for a student under 18 years of age is £776 per year, if your course was for two years the cost would be £1,552. If the student is over 18 years of age this would cost £1,035 per year, so if the course was for 2 years it would cost £2,075.
There are three Student Visa application options. Firstly, the Standard Service costing £524 with a processing time: Around 3 weeks. Secondly, a Priority Service costing, £524 visa application fee, plus £500 for Priority upgrade, Totalling, £1,124 with a processing time: of around 5 working days. Finally, the Super Priority Service costing £524 visa application fee, plus £1,000 for Super Priority upgrade, totalling £1,524 with a processing time of next working day (where available.
Student Visa Requirements and Graduate Visa Overview. You can apply for a UK Student Visa up to six months before your course begins. To apply, you must have, An Unconditional Offer from your University, A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) Document, and Proof of Financial Support such as a Bank Statement or an approved sponsor letter. After completing your course of study, you can apply for a Graduate Visa. You can apply for a 2 Year graduate visa if you apply on or before 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 the Graduate visa is for 18 Months. If you completed a PhD or doctoral programme you can apply for a 3-year Graduate visa.
When can you travel to the UK? You are allowed to travel to the UK before your Course begins. The specific timeframe depends on the duration of your course. Courses lasting 6 months or less: You can arrive up to one week before the course start date. Courses lasting more than 6 months: You can arrive up to one month before the course start date. You must not travel to the UK before the date specified on your visa, regardless of when your course begins.
