Many IVF clinics promote preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) as a way to improve pregnancy chances by selecting genetically normal embryos. While this sounds logical, the reality is far more complex—and misleading. PGD can only assess the number of chromosomes, not the 30,000 genes within an embryo. So even if an embryo appears chromosomally normal (euploid), it may still have undetectable genetic defects that lead to implantation failure or miscarriage.

Additionally, PGD results are often unreliable due to mosaicism—where the few cells biopsied may not represent the entire embryo. This leads to false positives (discarding healthy embryos) and false negatives (transferring embryos that still fail). The sad irony is that patients may spend extra money for PGD, thinking it increases success, when in fact it might reduce their chances of having a baby.

Moreover, PGD doesn’t replace the need for prenatal testing like NIPT or amniocentesis once pregnancy is achieved. Patients must understand that PGD is not a guaranteed path to success—it’s an expensive, unproven tool that needs to be approached with full knowledge of its limitations.
