House Bill 834 went into effect Dec. 1st of 2024 after Republican lawmakers overrode Governor Cooper's veto. This law repeals "Raise The Age", legislation that was passed in 2019 that states juveniles ages 16 and 17 who commit serious crimes in North Carolina are no longer charged as an adult. However, that has since been reversed under HB 834. Now, juveniles would be charged as adults to Superior Court for serious felony offenses. In the video above, Sheriff Garry McFadden lays out what this means for juveniles who are processed into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and ensures families that all juveniles will be safe and secure while in custody.
