οὐ γὰρ με Νὺξ ἔτικτε δεσπότην λύρας,
οὐ μάντιν, οὐδ’ ἰατρόν, ἀλλ’ εὐνάτορα ψυχαῖς.
— Fragment attributed to Aeschylus, 5th c. BCE
Hypnos is the ancient Greek god of Sleep, dwelling in the Land of Dreams in the Underworld, where poppies bloom in eternal night and no light or sound can enter. The dearest friend of the Muses, according to Pausanias, he is associated not only with sleep, dreams, and oblivion, but also with healing, peace, and the quiet inspiration that awakens creation.
But, as with everything in Greek mythology, there is a double meaning here.
Hypnos is the fatherless son of Night (Nyx) and the twin brother of Death (Thanatos), symbolizing how deeply these three forces were intertwined in the ancient world.
For “rest to the souls of men” can come not only in the form of sleep, but also through death.
"For Night did not bring me forth to be master of the lyre,
nor prophet, nor healer, but to bring rest to the souls of men."
This is an original composition by Şirin Pancaroğlu, an acclaimed performer and researcher of historical harp-like instruments, dedicated to the god Hypnos.
She performs on a LUTHIEROS Ancient Epigonion, masterfully handcrafted in Greece by the Koumartzis family. The epigonion, great ancestor of the modern harp, was once banned in Athens, as Plato and Aristotle feared that too many strings could stir emotion rather than cultivate virtue.
Yet it is precisely this power — to move the soul — that ancient music revives today.
