(15 Mar 2019) DESIGNERS DAVID BLOND, CHRISTIAN COWAN, NICOLA GLASS AND JASON WU LOOK BACK ON THEIR EARLIEST FASHION CREATIONS
Designer David Blond - from fashion house The Blonds - says he and his business partner, Phillipe Blond, began their fashion careers playing with dolls.
"When Phillipe and I were kids we would make clothes for dolls," recalls Blond. "You know, my next-door neighbor had Barbies, and all my girl cousins. So, you know, we would play with these Barbies and we would create our own - we didn't have something or if they didn't make something for the dolls - we would create them. And we ended up designing Barbies. But that's another story."
The iconic children's doll also served as an early muse for designer Jason Wu.
His first outfit was "a little dress on a Barbie doll."
"That was like my first thing ever. But yeah, and that was at least like 25 years ago," says the 36-year-old.
Irish designer Nicola Glass says her first item was "probably a piece of jewelry."
"I can remember at five-years-old making a piece of jewelry with some tinfoil," she says. "I think I might have proposed to someone with it."
Christian Cowan, however, says he's been designing since he was 12, but can't remember any of his early scribblings. However, remembers his first professional design very clearly.
"This isn't even a joke," insists Cowan. "The first design I ever made and designed was a pink glitter tuxedo that Lady Gaga ended up wearing for the first time and started my career. It was really nice. Yeah."
