For the first 20 years of my life as a practitioner, my focus was always on asking, "What's the matter?" I would search for the problem, try to fix it, and explain everything to my patients. It was a common approach, diagnosing and dictating what they needed. However, everything changed in the last two decades when I discovered powerful communication techniques through our Kaiser mission. The most profound lesson I learned was to eliminate the word "the" from my vocabulary. Instead, I shifted my mindset to asking, "What matters?" What truly matters to my patients became the key focus, and it transformed my entire practice. Those last years were a revelation. I connected with my patients on a deeper level, understanding their fears, hopes, and desires. Empathy and compassion took center stage, making my practice so much more enriched and meaningful. It was an incredible journey of growth, and I am grateful for the positive impact it brought to my patients' lives.
