George Gervin ran into a problem that has haunted high-flyers time and time again over the 50-year span of professional basketball dunk contests: He dunked outside of his comfort zone, leading to missed dunks which led to an inescapable hole for which he could not recover.

The NBA's inaugural dunk contest rules centered around two players facing off head-to-head in a battle to complete the best dunks from five different positions on the floor, with the winner advancing to the next round. Gervin's opponent, Joe C. Meriweather, made all of his dunks, ensuring his passage to the next round by default.
